Egg-static learning

Funded in

The Orchard Grove Primary school community consists of 578 students and would like to build a chook pen to house rescued chooks to produce eggs for the children to learn how to cook in the "Grove" kitchen . The chooks will be part of the environmental area and will help aerate the soil and reduce the insects and fertilise the soil. The children have designed the chook area and will care for the chooks.

The total project cost is… $1 000.00

The major costs associated with the project are…
Item 1 $350.00 - $395 Fox proofing of the area.
Item 2 $440.00 Materials for the chook pen.
Item 3 $45.00 Chook food & feeding materials.
Item 4 $120.00 Solar chook door.

The $1,000 grant will be used to… prepare the area to prevent foxes/predators and build the chook house.

Chooks are a great way for primary school kids to learn about sustainability, responsibility for animals and cooking. Orchard Grove Primary School has worked hard to instil in its students an understanding of the importance of sustainability, especially around food production, so having rescued chooks live at the School would be fantastic for the kids (and for the chooks, too).

Fantastic initiative that will teach the children responsibility to look after the chooks while exposing children to cooking and possibly eating a food they don't eat in the family home. A great sustainability project.

Happy, roaming chickens are beautiful to watch. And think of all the delicious dishes the kids could cook up together with what's growing in our veggie garden.
