Mornington Peninsula Leader
From the Bottom Up! Mount Eliza Secondary College – Steiner Wicking Bed Project
This student led project involves retro fitting an overgrown, abandoned garden bed with ‘Wicking bed’ technology to see how it compares to a conventional garden bed with plans of supplying food to the canteen, for cooking classes and a market to self- fund the garden. Community benefits include: providing an environmental education space for learning life- long skills, reducing water and food miles, project management skills, enhancing community relationships, influencing healthy eating habits.
The major costs associated with the project are
Wicking bed kit- $342 Soil- $203 Scoria- $115 Seedlings- $300 Fertiliser-$40
The $1,000 grant will be used

How they raise the rest of the funding
The Wicking Bed will be our prototype to test the technology, measuring the water use and food production in comparison to a conventional bed. If it proves successful, we will apply for further funding through the Local Government and local businesses. We aim to raise money for the garden through the production and sale of the produce grown. We have secured in-kind donations of time and resources made through our school and local community to assist with the long term viability of the project.
